Thinking of replacing your ad agency? Check the creative first.

By the adzFIX team · · 3 min read

Short answerA new agency running the same ads usually gets the same results. Separate the two jobs: the media buyer decides who sees the ad, the creative decides whether anyone stops. Diagnose which one is failing before you switch vendors.

It's the third month in a row the report looks the same. More spend, flat leads, a deck full of charts that explain why. You start drafting the email to find a new agency.

Before you send it, ask a different question: what exactly have they been asked to distribute?

Two jobs that look like one

Paid advertising has two separate jobs that often get blamed as one:

  • Distribution: budgets, bidding, audiences, campaign structure. This is the media buyer's craft.
  • Persuasion: the hook, the message, the visual, the offer. This is the creative.

Modern ad platforms automate a big share of distribution. Broad targeting and automated bidding mean the algorithm finds people for you. What it can't do is make your ad worth stopping for. When the creative is weak, a great media buyer simply delivers a weak ad more efficiently.

Switching agencies with the same ads is changing the driver and keeping the flat tire.

Signs the problem is creative, not campaign

  • Every new variation is the same angle with a different color or headline.
  • Your ads would make sense with a competitor's logo on them.
  • Results jump briefly with each new ad, then fade within days.
  • You can't say in one sentence why someone should choose you.
  • Nobody owns the question "what should we say?", only "what should we post?"

Signs the problem really is the campaign

  • Budget is spread across so many campaigns that none of them learns.
  • Conversion tracking is broken, missing or counting the wrong action.
  • Strong creative that worked before suddenly stopped after a structural change.
  • Nobody can explain the account structure to you in plain words.

A two-week test before you switch

Ask your current team to run one genuinely different creative angle, not a variation: a new promise, a new opening, a new reason to care. Keep the budget and targeting the same. If the new angle moves results, the agency wasn't the bottleneck. If nothing moves even with a strong new idea, now you have a real case for a change.

What to keep, whoever runs the account

Whatever you decide, the decisions about message and angle should belong to you, written down in a one-page brief that any team can execute. That way the next agency, or the current one, starts from clarity instead of guesswork.

The adzFIX Session gives you that clarity in one hour: a clear message, an angle and a prioritized plan your team can act on the next day, whoever that team is.

The money is already going out. Let’s make it come back.

One 60-minute session on Zoom. We review your ads and pages before the call, then spend the hour on decisions. $390, no retainer.
