Your Brief Asked for 6 Sizes. It Never Said What the Ad Should Say.
Most ad briefs list deliverables, not decisions, so designers decorate instead of persuade. A one-page ad creative brief template that fixes that.
ReadYou spent two weeks on the video. The offer is strong, the testimonial at second 20 is great, the product demo at second 35 is the best thing your team has ever shot. And almost nobody sees any of it.
Because by second three, most of the people you paid to reach were already gone. Your cost per acquisition went up, and the team is busy re-editing the ending.
Hook rate is an industry metric for video ads that answers one question: out of everyone who was shown the ad, how many stuck around for the first few seconds?
The common formula is:
Hook rate = 3-second video plays ÷ impressions × 100
Meta doesn't report a metric called “hook rate.” It does report the ingredients. In Meta's definition, 3-second video plays counts the times your video played for at least three seconds, or for nearly its full length if it's shorter than that, excluding replays within the same impression. Divide that by impressions and you have your hook rate.
Because every step after the hook depends on it. If nine out of ten people leave in the first three seconds, everything you built for second ten onward is shown to a sliver of the audience you paid for. The offer, the proof and the call to action are all fighting over the leftovers.
That's why a weak opening is so expensive. You pay for the full impression either way. The hook decides whether you get anything for it.
There's no honest universal number. Hook rate shifts with placement, format, audience and industry, and a figure that's strong for a Reel can be weak for a Feed video. The useful comparison is internal: your ads against your other ads, in the same placements, over the same period. When one ad's hook rate sits far below the rest, the first three seconds of that ad are where your money is leaking.
In one hour we tell you what to fix first, based on a review of your live ads done before the call.

And if your hook rate is fine but results still aren't, the leak is further down. Read whether your ad is fatigued or was never good, or why impressions don't turn into leads.
No. It's an industry calculation built from two metrics Meta does report: 3-second video plays and impressions. You can add it to Ads Manager as a custom metric.
Not directly, since it's built on video plays. For image ads, click-through rate is the closest signal of whether the ad stopped people.
Usually not if you want leads or sales. Optimize for the business result and use hook rate as a diagnostic for the creative. A video can hook people and still fail to sell.
